FLE = French as a Foreign Language.
Teaching the basics of French to master oral and written comprehension and to reach a level that allows self-expression by oral and written. The student leaves the classroom to study French language only with a FLE teacher.
Out-of-classroom learning: students are grouped together in a specific classroom to work on targeted skills.
FLSCO = French as a Language of Schooling.
It is an academic use of the language that articulates oral and written in all school subjects. The French language is both an academic subject and a tool for learning other subjects. French is not approached from the perspective of purely linguistic learning, but as a common tool for acquiring knowledge in other school subjects, covering concepts, notions and methods. The FLSCO teacher accompanies the students in class during lessons to explain to them what the teacher is currently offering in the various subjects (mathematics, science, grammar, etc.)
From upper kindergarten (GS) to fifth grade (CM2): In-house support: students are supported in the school teacher’s classroom, co-teaching.
Back to school course:
- 4 hours of French per week for one month: about 16 hours.
- Children who have started French during the previous school year will follow a refresher program in French.

When do students receive these supports during the school day?
In these programs, students are supported at specific times during the day (language time in particular, in consultation with the class teacher) for a period. The sessions are renewed if necessary after consultation at the end of each period.
After a trimester of intensive supervision, students who have acquired autonomy may no longer profit from the program. This will depend on close consultation between the FLE/FLSCO teacher and the class teacher – report in December 2023.
1) Our commitments
Role of the FLE/FLSCO teacher
- To promote the integration of neo-French-speaking students into their reference class by equipping them with both FLE and FLSCO skills;
- Work closely with the class teacher to understand the weekly objectives;
- Develop sessions that integrate both the expectations of the CEFR and the French national education programs;
- Participate in student follow-up and evaluation;
- Differentiate activities based on student level;
- Communicate with parents on student progress.
Role of the school teacher
The school teacher is the main teacher of the class in which the neo-French-speaking students are enrolled. He/she is responsible for these students in their entirety and has the mission to include them in the teaching of all subjects, without exception. The FLE/FLSCO teacher is present for these students for a limited period of time, the objective being their autonomy in the reference class. In the learning times when the neo-French-speaking students are present, he differentiates the activities in order to allow the students to work on the same skill as the others.
Role of the parents
Parents who enroll their child in Boule et Billes school must be informed of the French language program that will be suggested to their child. They agree to accompany and support their child in learning French and to follow the advice and recommendations given by the educational team, by signing a letter of commitment. For our part, the Boule et Billes school team is committed to communicating regularly on the progress of the students
2) Placement test :
- Children will be evaluated at the beginning of the school year.
- At the end of each period to decide whether to continue support for the next period.
- In June 2023 we will test the students in order to propose the appropriate support for the following year.
3) Extra-curricular French language support
In addition to the SLF program, allophone children will attend two hours of fun French language workshops (storytelling, theater, film, role-playing, language games, etc.) on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:20 to 4:20 pm.
These workshops are highly recommended for other students receiving FLE & FLSCO.
4) French language support for students in Middle Section (Kindergarten)
French language support will be available from April/May (P5) for MS students who have not reached the expected level at that time.
5) Further information
